What Is a Drum Unit and Is It the Same as Toner?

A toner cartridge holds the powder used to form text and images, while the drum unit transfers that image onto the paper. They may be sold together or as separate consumables, depending on the printer design.

Drums gradually wear because they rotate through the printer and interact with cleaning and transfer components. The printer’s design determines whether you buy one combined cartridge or two separate consumables. A cartridge that physically fits may still be incorrect if its electrical contacts, chip, gearing, or imaging configuration does not match the printer.

Cartridge, drum, printhead, and waste components

Toner cartridge

Page yield: what it tells you—and what it does not

Page yield is an estimate of how many pages a cartridge or toner supply can print under a specified test method. It is not a guarantee that every user will receive the same number of pages.

Do not replace the drum every time you replace toner unless your printer uses an all-in-one cartridge. Conversely, replacing toner will not resolve a confirmed drum-life warning in a printer with separate consumables.
